While the way any material is used will vary based on the unique situations and abilities of the users, here are some general usage ideas.
Picture Schedule:
For setting up a visual picture schedule system, these cards may work well with our free download:
"SpeechPage's 13 Pages of Picture Schedule & Visual Strategies!"
The free download has a variety of display pages and ideas to get you started.
Some suggestions for usage are included in this free download. It says in part:
"Some individuals have difficulty with following the order of the events of their day. A visual schedule can help to make the ideas of the daily routine more understandable to students who have difficulty with abstract concepts. A visual schedule breaks down the individual tasks into steps that are represented with visual pictures, which are better understood by those who have stronger visual learning skills."
Picture Communication:
The use of picture symbols for the student's expressive communication will vary depending on the levels of understanding and abilities of the student. These symbols could be used in communication systems that involve picture exchange or communication systems involving pointing, such as when they are displayed in pocket chart pages or velcroed onto surfaces for display. Ability to understand symbolic representations such as picture symbols will vary. Please consult with a Speech Language Pathologist for further information on using picture communication systems.
Teaching Concepts such as Categories:
These cards cover a wide range of common daily vocabulary themes such as 'foods', 'clothes', 'art supplies' etc. A fun teaching idea for working with the student to understand categories might be sorting some of them into groups by common features. One idea might be labeling sections of a paper into the category groups such as food or drink and working with the student to understand why a card might work best in a certain category or in more than one category. Another fun idea is to put three 'fruit' cards and one 'non fruit together and ask the student to find the one that does not fit the group. etc.

There may be other usage ideas not mentioned here as well. We recommend consulting with the student's educational team for specific home-carryover or other usage of any materials.
